Telus Geomatics: Constructing Street Centerline for Alberta

In December 1999, Telus Geomatics awarded MRF Geosystems Corporation a contract to develop an addressable Single Line Street Network (SLSN) for the entire province of Alberta, which consists of about 250,000 road segments with civic address ranges.

Single Line Street Network represents a commonly used technique for geocoding civic addresses. The network consists of street centre-line segments and their associated street names and address ranges. The centre-lines for individual streets are segmented for each portion of a street running between two intersections.

Work on Telus SLSN includes:

  • Merge centre-line linework from various sources in order to have the latest linework for each road type.
  • Separate out linework belonging to individual municipalities.
  • Clean linework (create intersections, remove dangles, etc.) for each municipality.
  • Create additional breaks in linework for better geocoding accuracy.
  • Capture street name, the beginning and ending addresses for each street segment.
  • Automate processing of rural maps by custom software tools.
