City of Winnipeg: GeoMedia Pro Based Centerline Maintenance Project

The City of Winnipeg maintained the database of its Street Centre Line Network in GDS (for graphics) and Sybase (for tabular data). The centreline data was exported to a number of other systems on a periodic basis and used as a reference for property mapping, pavement management, bus routing, and water distribution. To improve the system, The City of Winnipeg selected Intergraph’s GeoMedia as the new GIS software. MRF developed a GIS solution based on GeoMedia Pro plus Oracle Spatial. MRF solution is responsible for maintaining the nodes, segments, and courses (streets and rivers) that make up the Street Center Line Network as well as other attributes associated with each of these entities. Additionally, this new system continues to provide data to the existing centerline users in a familiar format.

Major tasks of the application were:

Perform system analysis and design to meet the short term and long term needs of the City.

Refine the centerline data model and design major algorithms.

Develop application components to:

  • Manage View: To allow a user to zoom to a street address or the intersection of two streets.
  • Manage Map Feature: MRF developed an application to support map feature maintenance and to enforce some business rules to ensure the integrity of the system, such as Extract Features, Validate, Save or Discard Changes. Edit tools include Manage Node, Manage Segment, Manage Course, Select/Filter Features, Query Features, etc.

MRF abilities in data migration, GIS application development, database programming are demonstrated in this project.
