Alberta Forest Protection VisMap Application in ArcMap

In February, 2006, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development awarded MRF a contract to develop an ArcView 9.1 based application – The Visible Area and Analysis System (VisMap) – to support the management of wildfire lookout tower network Visible Area Maps. These maps provided graphic indication of various degrees of visibility at each lookout tower and allowed staff to select aerial patrol routes, locate fires, and identify blind areas.  VisMap application will be used as a decision support tool in ArcView environment to assist the planning of new towers and optimize the lookout tower network to maximize the visibility area.

The VisMap application has the following capabilities:

·         VisMap is both analysis and mapping tool that can perform visibility and best placement analysis and produce visibility maps and reports.

·         Perform single tower or a group of towers visibility analysis and mapping

·         Support flexible parameter configuration

·         Support multiple visibility classifications

·         Provide functions for best placement of lookout towers

·         Provide a 3D viewer of the visibility visualization

To date, MRF has completed the detailed system design, visibility component development, and part of the 3D viewer development. The entire application has been developed an ArcView extension.

Software used in the development of this project: MRF Visibility COM component, ArcObjects, ArcMap 9.1, and ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension.
